Decorative chip and flake systems broadcast colored acrylic chips into a wet epoxy base coat, then seal with a clear polyurea topcoat. The result is an attractive, textured floor with a non-slip surface that hides minor surface imperfections and comes in dozens of color combinations. This is the most popular residential garage floor coating system installed by our network in Anderson County.
Oak Ridge sits in the Ridge-and-Valley province of East Tennessee, a planned community built rapidly in the early 1940s for the Manhattan Project, which means an unusually large share of the city's housing stock — the original Cemesto and Alphabet houses — dates to that single wartime construction boom on slabs and foundations poured to 1940s standards rather than modern ones. Many of those original garages have never been touched since, sitting on concrete that's absorbed eight decades of East Tennessee humidity and freeze-thaw cycling off the surrounding ridges. Newer construction toward the Oak Ridge Turnpike and out past the original town boundary sits on more current graded pads. The Ridge-and-Valley terrain here funnels moisture into specific low pockets after rain, and combined with the region's sharp winter freezes, Oak Ridge's older garage slabs in particular show cracking and coating failure patterns tied directly to that decades-long moisture exposure.
How Chip Systems Work
After the base coat is applied, decorative chips (also called flakes) are broadcast into the wet material — either sparsely for a terrazzo look or heavily for full coverage. The excess chips are scraped off once the base cures, then a clear polyurea topcoat is applied to seal and protect the surface. The chip layer adds texture for slip resistance, adds visual interest, and helps conceal minor concrete imperfections under the coating.
Color and Style Options
Chip blends come in dozens of standard color combinations — grays, browns, neutrals, and multi-color blends. Full-broadcast systems cover the concrete completely with a consistent chip coverage. Partial broadcast systems let the base coat color show through for a different aesthetic. Your contractor will bring samples to your assessment visit so you can see options in your space before committing to a color.
